Especially in the world of Aromatherapy, it can be easy to look to the SCENT of an Essential Oil and judge what we think about it—if an oil smells good, we might throw a few drops into a diffuser and enjoy the scent all day long.
While the scent of an Essential Oil can be enjoyable, or at times not so pleasant, we must remember that the HEALTH BENEFITS should be considered before the SCENT.
If our child had an upset stomach and a doctor suggested a tummy soother, we would never show up at the Pharmacy and require a scent test before purchasing it. We would trust that our doctor gave us something with health benefits that matched our concern. We wouldn’t really care what it smelled like or even the way it tasted.
When considering Essential Oils, we can move past a scent and look to the health benefits. And, if a scent is really keeping us from enjoying our experience, there are several things that we can do to help.
Here are 5 Tips to help when you don’t particularly care for the scent of an Essential Oil:
1. When using aromatically, look at what Essential Oils complement and blend with the oil you are wanting to use (e.g., diffuse Turmeric Essential Oil with oils like Clove, Wild Orange, Pink Pepper, or Sandalwood).
2. Blend the oil with one of your favorite types of Essential Oils. (e.g., if you like wood oils, try adding Siberian Fir or Frankincense Essential Oil)
3. If the Essential Oil can be taken internally, add it to a capsule so you don’t have to smell it.
4. If the scent feels like it is overpowering you, it may mean that your body metabolizes that oil rapidly and it is reaching that metabolic threshold. Try diluting it down more than other oils (e.g., if Peppermint Essential Oil is way strong for you, consider using 5 drops in your roller bottle instead of 10).
5. Look at the company chemistry wheel and choose an oil with similar properties that you would like to use instead. [Insert company link here.]
